We wanted to expand this primer of terminology and bump the level up a notch. We needn\u2019t repeat ourselves here, so we have the luxury to dive directly into the jargon. It also means we can share more of it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like last time, we will focus on what\u2019s important. Sure, there are thousands of words and phrases we could teach you, but some are simply more relevant than others. For example, we could tell you about <em>rclone<\/em>, which is a command line tool for syncing files to cloud storage services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, it\u2019s related to web hosting, but it\u2019s not something an everyday user would necessarily encounter. No, we have chosen far more useful things to discuss, which we have separated into neat categories for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-hosting-environments-where-the-magic-happens\">Hosting Environments: Where the Magic Happens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You already know from our previous blog post what are some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcomet.com\/blog\/beginners-guide-to-web-hosting-jargon#4-server-related-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">common types of hosting<\/a>. Those are generally known as environments and in this first section we\u2019ll go over a few more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When looking through hosting plans online you might have come across these two words: <em>managed<\/em> and <em>unmanaged<\/em>. What do they mean? They simply denote the level of technical support and management offered by the hosting provider. We have compiled a table for you with the most important differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Feature\/Responsibility<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Managed Hosting<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Unmanaged Hosting<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Server Setup<\/td><td>Done for you by the hosting provider.<\/td><td>You\u2019re responsible for setting everything up.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Software Updates<\/td><td>Automatically handled (OS, security patches, etc.).<\/td><td>You must install and update software manually.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Security Monitoring<\/td><td>Included (firewalls, malware scans, intrusion detection).<\/td><td>You must configure and manage your own security.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Technical Support<\/td><td>24\/7 support for hosting and software-related issues.<\/td><td>Limited or no help with software. Only for hardware\/network.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Control Panel<\/td><td>Typically included (e.g. cPanel).<\/td><td>May or may not be included. On the other hand, if you are a tech expert and want full control over your server, then an <em>unmanaged<\/em> hosting plan is right up your alley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from those two, there are two more environments that are worth mentioning: <em>production<\/em> and <em>staging<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Production &#8211; <\/strong>The <em>production <\/em>environment is where the live, public version of your site lives. It\u2019s where users can interact with your site. Any changes here will directly affect the site, potentially causing disruptions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Staging &#8211; <\/strong>The <em>staging<\/em> environment is the opposite. It is a separate, isolated environment used for testing changes and updates before they go live. Since it is separate from the <em>production<\/em>, anything done here will not affect it. Crucial for ensuring everything works before pushing it to the live website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, knowing the difference between staging, live environments, and how hosting is managed is vital. You know what your options are, and can choose with confidence, depending on your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-speed-amp-performance-what-keeps-your-site-zippy\">Speed &amp; Performance: What Keeps Your Site Zippy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, let\u2019s talk about speed. Everyone loves a quick website: from visitors to Google. But what makes a website fast (or slow)? We\u2019ll discuss precisely that in this section. All is web hosting jargon related to website speed and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding these terms can help you make smarter hosting decisions, especially when choosing between plans or diagnosing slowdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CDN (Content Delivery Network) &#8211; <\/strong>This is a network of servers across the globe. The special thing about this network is that its purpose is to cache your website\u2019s content and deliver it from a location closest to your visitors. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcomet.com\/blog\/hosting-location-impact-perfomance-seo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shorter the distance between your visitor and the server<\/a>, the faster the load speeds. We recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcomet.com\/tutorials\/cloudflare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cloudflare<\/a>, as their free plan has everything an everyday user might need.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Caching &#8211; <\/strong>Speaking of caching, let\u2019s elaborate on that term. Caching stores copies of your website&#8217;s content (like pages, images, and code) temporarily so that it can be loaded quickly without regenerating it every time. If your site feels sluggish, the jargon in this section can help you identify the bottleneck, and fix it faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-security-jargon-don%E2%80%99t-panic-just-learn\">Security Jargon: Don\u2019t Panic, Just Learn<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Website security can sound intimidating. After all, there are a ton of threats lurking online. Not to worry, though!&nbsp; Most of it boils down to a few key concepts that we explain in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcomet.com\/blog\/ways-to-stay-safe-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of our blog posts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;And to help you better understand what those concepts are, here\u2019s the web hosting jargon you\u2019ll most likely encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>DDoS Protection &#8211; <\/strong>A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack floods your site with fake traffic to overwhelm your server. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcomet.com\/blog\/essential-ddos-protection-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DDoS protection tools<\/a> help detect and block these attacks before they can take your site down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>WAF (Web Application Firewall) &#8211; <\/strong>A WAF filters traffic to your site and blocks malicious requests. It automatically runs scripts at set times, such as daily backups, sending emails, or updating databases.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>DNS Propagation<\/td><td>When you change your domain&#8217;s DNS (like pointing it to a new host), it takes time to update worldwide. Usually between a few hours to 48 hours. That waiting period is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcomet.com\/tutorials\/getting-started\/dns-propagation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DNS propagation<\/a>.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>.htaccess<\/td><td>This is a configuration file used on Apache servers (one of the most common web servers).
